Is there such thing as free legal music?

Okay so I have never tried Limewire or Ares because it is illegal and my mom only lets me get music from iTunes. I heard that you can download free music legally @ music.podshow.com. Is this true? Are there any legal free music download sites? And is the sound quality as good as iTunes?
